We've been working with Finn on saying the blessing before dinner and usually he gives us Finn's version of "God is great, God is good . . " which means lots of thanks for our daily bread (seriously, he thanks God for the daily bread at least twice in a single sentence). However, tonight he branched out and said the sweetest, funniest blessing ever. I had to go and write it down immediately after so I wouldn't forget it.
"Dear God, thank you for our food and blessings and families and lights that go out so that we can fix them and Christmas trees. The end. Amen."
This is why I love sitting down as a family to have dinner together, because of moments like this. Don't get me wrong, it can be hard to do and I often encounter resistance and lots of complaints on my no tv, movies or phone rule, but I wouldn't trade hearing that prayer for anything in the world, even if it comes with a side dish of whine.
